What was turning out to be a relatively quiet store mart this coming Saturday now looks to be a s busy as previous sales. Entries have been coming in quick and fast already this week and total entries are approaching the 250 head mark. Entries include over 100 heifers so far and nearly 150 steers. Published: 15th July 2015
The trade from the first sale attracted a larger entry of ewes and with that came more buyers. As the season moves on the demand for rams will increase and this was seen in only the second sale of the year. Top price was 325gns for a Charolais yearling from Davies, Brynygroes Fawr. Rams averaged £260. More whitefaced ewes and a greater mix of quality saw a more varied trade on the day but the first quality yearlings were selling well. Texel X topped the day again at £146 from Jones, Bromebyd who also sold for £134 followed by Suffolk yearlings from Jenkins, Lower House at £129 who also sold a pen of Mule X yearlings at £126. A pen of Welsh yearlings sold for £65 and aged ewes also sold well with a top of £94.Published: 13th July 2015
Lambs take a big slump in the space of 7 days and in our case in 24 hours. Monday saw an average of 152ppk in our Cardigan Mart, 15p down on the previous week, yet Whitland was down to 138ppk throughout. So it’s not just the dairy section suffering at the moment and one of the main commentaries were that not only were deadweight outlets dropping prices but weren’t even accepting lambs. “You just can’t get them in anywhere” was one farmer’s grievance. So we must reiterate that never did any livestock market say we don’t want or we can’t take your stock. If the direct supply was reduced they would soon be shouting for lambs and where better to sell then, than in the live ring where they have no choice but to compete. It would surely be a better situation to hear buyers grumble that they “just can’t get the lambs” than how it is currently. “Sell Live and Thrive”!! A motto for all producers to consider at these difficult times!!Published: 1st July 2015
The first breeding sheep sale at Whitland was held on Friday and with nearly a thousand sheep forward the current lamb trade made for a wary outlook. However, things went a lot better than everyone had hoped. Though down £10/head on last years trade, prices were £10-15 up on expectations and we saw a top price of £141 for Texel yearlings and £130 for Suffolk yearlings all from D A Goodwin. A complete clearance saw an overall average of £118 with rams selling to 300gns. The next sale is in a fortnight on Friday, 10th July. Entires to Whitland Mart on 01994 240665. One of the best sales of the year providing the variety of cattle to satisfy the great demand that there was for all classes of cattle. Grazing cows got the sale off to a fast start averaging 108ppk and the trade that followed for the stores was one of the best seen in 2015 anywhere in the area. Heifers sold to £1265 and steers to £1320 with over 100 cattle in all selling over £1000. A larger entry of cows and calves met a strong demand averaging £1256 throughout with a top of £1580 while an entry of Pedigree Beef Shorthorn Incalvers sold to £1180. Please note that it is now important to record the calf’s sire’s details on the Calf Registration form for BCMS and include the sire’s name on the passport. This is especially relevant for beef breeds that command a premium at slaughter, e.g. Aberdeen Angus. Some outlets will only purchase Aberdeen Angus x calves if this information is on the passport. It is only a little extra work at registration, and hopefully it will result in vendors continuing to receive good prices for their stock. Help us to help you by making the effort now and in the future. The same will apply for producers who rear calves to sell as stores/finished cattle. Get in to the habit and it will become second nature.
